Thirty-one people who had been scheduled to testify in the criminal case against East Chicago political fixer Robert Cantrell have been told to hold on to their trial subpoenas until May 27.

The trial was set for March 31, but it was pushed back until after the May primary election when defense attorney Kevin Milner said he needed more time to prepare for the case. Milner suggested that denying the request could create grounds for appeal.

Prosecutors opposed the request. After the delay was granted, they asked U.S. District Judge Rudy Lozano to also continue to keep active the subpoenas for 31 people who are expected to testify in the case.

Cantrell is accused of health insurance fraud, depriving the public of honest services and tax fraud for his dealings with a Hammond-based mental health contractor who has admitted paying Cantrell to help get work with his former employer, the North Township trustee's office.
