The trial for a Gary city employee, former police reserve and a local businessman has been delayed until December, according to a federal court order.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew Rodovich ruled in an order filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Hammond in favor of Jacquelyn Drago - Hunter ’s request to delay the trial, which was scheduled to start Aug. 22, until Dec. 5.

Drago - Hunter , who works for Gary as director of the Department of Community Development, had asked last week for the delay, saying in the filing her attorney needed more time to prepare.

The government had asked that if her trial was delayed, the trial for her co-defendants, Jerry Haymon and Phillip Rucker, who used to work as a reserve for the Gary Police Department, start on time.

Rodovich ruled, however, that they all be tried in December.

The three have been charged in connection with a mortgage fraud scheme.

Haymon would find buyers willing to buy homes for tens of thousands of dollars more than the asking price but lie to the owners, saying the offer was for the asked amount, an indictment says.

The defendants would then create a fake closing document to give to the owners, forge their documents on the actual one and pocket the difference between the asking price and selling price by filing fake liens against the homes, according to the indictment.
