HAMMOND | Former North Township Trustee supervisor Robert Cantrell is seeking leave from home confinement to attend his son John Cantrell’s upcoming wedding in New Orleans.

Robert Cantrell’s attorney, Thomas Vanes, formally made the request for Cantrell to travel from his Schererville home to serve as his son’s best man at the Sept. 27 wedding.

Cantrell, who is currently on an electronic monitoring device, was sentenced on March 31, 2009, to six and a half years in federal prison for using his public office to steer contracts to a substance abuse counseling company in exchange for cash kickbacks. He also was found guilty of insurance fraud for “deceptively procuring” township-funded health insurance coverage for two of his children and filing false income tax returns. He was subsequently denied an appeal on the basis of his trial attorney Kevin Milner’s performance.

Cantrell plans to travel to New Orleans via automobile on Sept. 23, stay at a New Orleans hotel, and return home on Sept. 29. He will need the Federal Board of Prisons approval to travel to New Orleans.

“Mr. Cantrell is a 72-year-old, diabetic non-drinker, and there is no risk to public safety associated with the requested furlough,” Vanes stated in the court filing. He notes Cantrell has had no disciplinary sanctions during his time of incarceration.

Cantrell’s projected release date is Jan. 9, 2015.
