PORTAGE — The City Council this week approved expanding the Portage Utility Board by two members.

City Council President Mark Oprisko said the board has had five members, but never had a representative from the City Council. Expanding the number of board members from five to seven would allow a council member to sit on the board.

The proposal was unanimously approved by the council.

The proposal also expands the number of appointments by the mayor from three to four. Those appointments would be split between political parties and would serve four-year terms.

It also allows the council to increase its appointments from two to three, including the council member. Resident members would serve four-year terms while the council member would serve a one-year term.

Resident Mark Hasza was appointed to the additional resident spot on the board and Oprisko was appointed to represent the City Council.

The salaries for board members is $2,750 per year. The council member on the board will receive no compensation.
