Former Sheriff John Buncich moves to a federal prison in Oklahoma

Former Lake County Sheriff John Buncich has moved to the Sooner State on his journey to a permanent federal prison assignment.
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons website indicates the 72-year-old former law enforcement official is currently being housed at its Federal Transfer Center located near the Will Rogers World Airport, west of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Buncich is serving a 188-month sentence after a U.S. District Court jury found him guilty in August of bribery and fraud charges that he solicited and received illegal payments from towing firms angling for lucrative towing work from the Lake County police.
Highland attorney Kerry C. Connor is appealing Buncich's judgment.
The Bureau of Prisons didn't return calls seeking comment. A handbook on the agency's website states the facility is primarily designed to house, on a short-term basis, inmates in transit to other prison facilities. The average length of stay is four to six weeks.
Buncich told U.S. District Court Judge James Moody at his Jan. 16 sentencing he would prefer to serve his time at a federal prison camp in Yankton, South Dakota, but was warned the court's placement recommendation isn't binding on the Bureau of Prisons.
The judge ordered him into custody immediately at the finish of his sentencing hearing. He stayed at Chicago's Metropolitan Correctional Center until his current move. Buncich's estimated release date is Sept. 8, 2031.
