An alleged corruption vortex keeps swirling faster around Lake County Sheriff John Buncich, and he doesn't seem to mind the rest of the county circling the drain with him.
Earlier this month, Buncich issued a public statement proclaiming his innocence to federal felony bribery and wire fraud charges in an alleged towing contract kickback scheme.
A week later, the federal prosecutors announced two additional wire fraud charges, linked to transactions Buncich made with alleged ill-gotten bribery gains.
The dark cloud of the federal charges have been hovering over Buncich since the initial indictment was announced in November, and it continues to rain down distrust that compromises the integrity of the chief law enforcement office for the county.
Lake County residents and other county officials unwillingly are being forced to weather the same storm.
Shortly after Buncich's November indictment, we implored him to step down and focus on his criminal defense while leaving the reputation of his office and the county out of his legal troubles.
Instead, he selfishly clung to power, and two new criminal charges have surfaced in the interim.
We renew our call today for Buncich to resign. If he ever possessed a true desire to serve the best interests of Lake County, resignation is the appropriate course of action.
